My dad has cancer. It is of the self-inflicted variety. His cancer is typically seen in older men who have smoked or had acid reflux, and lately, in women who have contracted HPV. In this case, as in the case of the cervix, cancer can develop. However the body part affected in these women, and in my dad's case, is the oesophagus. You do the Math...
We've known for a long time that "every cigarette is doing you damage". My emaciated father is currently living proof of this. He is probably the oldest looking 67 year old you will ever see. My Grandfather died on Mothers' Day last year, aged 98, and based on appearance alone, you would not assume there was a thirty-odd year gap. I hadn't realised how much my brother resembled Dad until one day, as an adult, I looked afresh at my parents' wedding photos. They bear no resemblance to each other now, except the times they both are holding cigarettes. I pray my brother stops this act of self-harm before he succumbs to the inevitable consequences.
As I write this, I slip in and out of a doze. I am becoming more incoherent as the heaviness increases in my eyelids. I will continue to tell this tale when I can concentrate for more that a word and a hakaz,
