Fitness First?

October 20th 2007 13:39
This, I think, is a misnoma (or a mis-Mela-noma, as my husband quipped when I discussed this with him).
I was horrified, as was everyone else I spoke to on Monday morning when I arrived at the gym, to find the cafe; source of precious caffeine an comfy seats after training sessions, and before retrieving Mattie-Boom-Bah from the creche, has been closed.
I realise that caffeine is not deemed a health food, but this cafe also does the protein shake/muesli/salads/low GI fare that you'd expect, as well as delicious Banana Bread and Baby Cino for the little guy. It also provided a place to chat to friends without naked people walking around in the background, and the ambience of post-workout rank!

Now the coffee options are, due to convenience, the Maccas Drive-Thru, where, let's face it, I'll probably get a Sundae, as I now can't get my delicious yoghurt.
Nobody seems happy about the change. Any comments made to the front desk are greeted with steely, mechanical responses along the lines of, "Please complain to the Owner/Manager". I intend to...
I am yet to discover the motivation for gutting the cafe, but it cannot be for our health. I surmise this is so as the solarium is still in operation. Furthermore, there's a sandwich board outside the entrance of the club offering discounts on pre-paid, bulk buy solariam sessions.
How hypocritical for a Health Club to exploit the vanity of its members for financial gain; particularly when the consequences could be Death by Melanoma.
Two words, Fitness First: Clare Oliver.
I think I'll email my mate Julian and ask him to pull up to the club in the hearse, with his tanning bed coffin!

Adding to the post above... The fact that they systematically exploit their members through advertising doesn't make it better either.

To find Advertising about plastic surgery on plasma screens across the whole facility while working out your abs on the floor makes me feel sick. What is that? Exploitation for the mighty dollar.

Also, they promote frozen foods as a healthy choice as long as its mcCain (worth a fortune i advertising revenue)... yeah the one printed on every page in the fitness first magazine....

Plus the fact that their personal trainers is under the gun of hefty fees that they need to pay to FF just to be able to work there????

A towel is $10 AUSD to hire (7 bux deposit) 3 bux for the hire... ??? Thanks for the service FF

Also meanwhile they squeezing everything they can they raise the membership fees.... Seriously?

Money First... Fitness later

Thanks, Anon.
I haven't been there for some months, but I agree with what you're saying. Their music videos were always highly sexualised. Now, to add to insecurities about body image etc they are actually advocating plastic surgery?! What a miserable organisation.
I had tried the personal trainers, and found them very pushy. I see why now. They work in terrible conditions.
Anyway, my kayak's due to arrive tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to some different training in God's beautiful creation.
Thanks for your comments.
