It's the Final Countdown!
November 24th 2007 07:39
The day I've longed for these past 3.5 years is almost over. Whilst the Ten News still seem buoyant that it will be Kevin 07 who takes the trophy, in my own seat of Hughes, I'm not so sure...
When I rocked up, wearing a t-shirt bearing this image, there was one bloke in a Kevin 07 shirt, a massive poster of “Christian Democratic Party” (and I use “” as I would question the Christianity of these people determined to hate immigrants, who I think are also God’s creatures, according to my reading of the Scriptures) candidate Paul Green in bowtie and tux (?) next to a bunch of flyers, an ALP pamphleteer, a man from the Greens, and a handful of silver haired gents wearing what I'd describe as "Anti-Thinking Caps"; appropriately a Martianesque shade of fluora green and supporting the ditsy Danna Vale.
Unfortunately, my chat with the ALP and Greens reps (who my husband noted were standing together on the left, with the Vale groupies on the far right!), suggests that most of those who live near me, including 1st time voters, were taking advice from the Libs...
Oh, dear.
What can we conclude about our neighbours from this?
1) They are self-interested, voting for their own economic reasons first.
2) They don't care about the environment. This, in a suburb that fought tooth and nail to stop a through road trashing the landscape, which was thankfully stopped by NSW Planning Minister, Frank Sartor. One can only assume they were more concerned about their property values and traffic slowing their individual journeys down.
3) They are uneducated and uncompassionate. Clearly, anyone with a brain and heart cannot vote for a PM wth a trackrecord of lies and broken promises, whose great aim seems to be to dumb down the electorate as much as possible so that they can't deconstruct the propaganda and see that he is an insipid, lying, manipulative snake. Why else would he think building his own technical colleges (as opposed to strengthening TAFE), taking Nurse Education away from Universities (to reduce the exposure of these workers to alternative thought and broader education and research skills), and do things in the past such as take away funds from Behind the News (a show which deconstructs current affairs issues and shows them in historical context... never great for a pollie who depends on people's short memories, as the show often demonstrated to Primary aged school kids how uncompassionate and downright evil a lot of government stances were to the poor and defenceless in our society, such as the unemployed, asylum seekers, low income earners, and people from Non English Speaking Backgrounds).
I can only deduce that they either don't know, or don't care.
4) They are as stupid as Danna Vale herself! For why would a person who actually cares about climate change issues vote for someone who believes it's not man-made as the other planets are heating up too? Furthermore, these NIMBYs are forgetting that we live downstream from ANSTO's Nuclear Reactor, and the Liberals want to build Nuclear Power Plants! Only idiots would enable idiots to continue to trash their own backyards.
Yes, the banjos were twanging very loudly in our valley today. Hopefully there are a few more braincells firing in the broader Hughes electorate, and Greg Holland will get over the line. Then Danna can "stay brave and true" and get back on her spaceship, to the sound of the duelling banjos and the glam rockers Europe, and take with her any who are comforted by her racist-toned campaign slogan, "One of Us"... And possible Wallabies Coach Mark II, Alan Jones, seeing she’s such a fan of his.
"We're heading for Venus"
Meanwhile back here in Hughes, at least I gave the ALP lady and Green man a chuckle with a copy of my “Jesus Would Be Left” song from last election, which was intended for the CDP pamphleteers. The Green man left it amongst their flyers. I hope they get the message.
And I really, REALLY hope tonight doesn’t finish like “Don’s Party”, with a desperate scrape around the ashtray of my political convictions.
