Jesus Would Be "Left"!
October 16th 2007 02:15
This is a little ditty I scribed before the last election, and got hammered for on the Anglican Media Website. Just like Howard and his Public Servants who change Wikipedia, this post has been wiped from the Anglican Annals; perhaps on a directive from someone who felt it was all a bit too radical.
However I think the last few years have encouraged Christian voters to rethink the Right's usage of Jesus as poster-boy, and there has been deeper reflection on the Biblical Jesus, in light of issues such as Iraq, treatment of refugees, and whether economic rationalism is really in step with Biblical principles of how wealth is to be used. Hallelujah!
Some of the references in it were drawn from the last election campaign, such as a Green party member being called "a watermelon"; "He might be green on the outside, but he's red on the inside"- a reference to this person being a Communist! Now Jesus' mission was not about political reform, but about getting people into God's Kingdom by paying the admission price to eternal life for us by his death on the cross; however the accusation might have been made to him, too. The "Peter" allusion is in reference to the insipid Peter Costello visiting the Hillsong Conference to attract the votes to the Coalition. This made the bile rise, I'll tell you!
Also, like my last post, I refer to the fear-mongerng over interest rate hikes under a Labor Government, which was a blatant lie as Governments have no power to increase interest rates as it is the Reserve Bank which wields power in this realm. Of course, Howard is now adamant that this is the case, as he has been in power during the escalation of rates in recent history.
Anyway, enjoy! If any other references confuse you, post a reply and I'll seek to contextualise things.
“Jesus would be ‘Left’!” (to the tune of “Jesus is no Fairy Tale” by Colin Buchanan)
VERSE 1:
It’s time for an election.
It’s time for us to choose.
We’d like to have a leader who
Would walk in Jesus’ shoes.
But when I think about the loaves and fish
And the thousands that he fed,
I think if he were here today,
They’d call Jesus “red”.
CHORUS:
Jesus is no right-wing man.
He’s left, he’s left, you see!
So into social justice
That He died for you and me.
Christian pollies, Christian voters
Asking “What Would Jesus Do?”
Open up your Bibles!
Read the Gospels! Then go to!
VERSE 2:
If you seek asylum,
If you’re a refugee,
Jesus says to you, “If you need rest,
Then come to me.”
Jesus loved “boat people”!
Some were his closest friends.
It’s people like our refugees
Lord Jesus would defend.
VERSE 3:
If you’re a Christian NIMBY,
If you’re from the Bible belt,
The Hills may be alive,
But millions more deserve your help.
Come out of your McMansions,
See them through the eyes of Christ,
It’s the Peter from the Gospels
Who can point their way to life.
VERSE 4:
So this time on election day,
Don’t just vote for you.
Vote so Jesus’ justice
In this world can shine right through.
God’s sovereign! So don’t fear
High tax, high int’rest, terror strikes.
“Don’t worry” says Lord Jesus.
So you’re free to not vote right!
