SRK exploits system for shameless self-promotion?

February 11th 2010 11:50
It seems the SMH has caught SRK fever. Suddenly aware of the mega-star, through his self-alleged signings of the body scans that were, according to him, print-outs from the machines which apparently cannot record images or print anything (yeah, right. Who makes any piece of technology without a USB port these days, especially when the transfer of data is critical between airports, security and intelligence agencies?), the Herald has gone on a SRK spree! With links to articles as far back as last August, the SMH has found a great story that they'll milk for all it's worth. With Indo-Australian relations tense due to the spate of attacks on NRI's studying Down Under, the AR Rahman concert during the Sydney Festival, and the Butter Chicken stalls at the SCG this summer, Sydney can't get enough of the subcontinent. Bollywood has become cool, and newsworthy, since the Brett Lee/Asha duet fiasco has faded into obscurity, like the careers of many a former ACB contracted player.
Shah Rukh is hot stuff at the Herald offices. Add the delightful controversy of him daring to say some of those "ball biters" should have been selected to play in the IPL, and you've got a classic controversy combining cricket, culture clashes and cocky superstars. Add some burning efigies and the potential for greater Hindu-Muslim tension than the Hindu Indians exiting Parramatta Park when AR Rahman donned the hat and began a long set of Sufi songs, and you can practically hear the editors crying "Hadippa!" as this made for Bollywood scenario unfolds.

Or perhaps it's made by Bollywood, for Bollywood? The fact that American authorities are denying SRK's claims he was detained, at the airport, when "The actor is in the US to promote a new film, My Name is Khan, which is about racial profiling of Muslims after the September 11, 2001" seems a little coincidental to me. What better publicity is there than life imitating art?
